That Little Place achieves Runner Up in the prestigious annual Observer Food Awards for Best Sunday Lunch 2014
Accolades bestrowed on some of the country's top food establishmants have been announced in the Sunday Observer and Harpenden's That Little Place is there confirmed as Runner Up in Best Sunday Lunch.
Delighted co-owners John Gunner and chef Alec Goodhand learnt of their success through Sunday morning telephone calls and visits from local diners. "We had no idea this had happened and had to go next door to buy a newspaper to see for ourselves", explained John. "For a local British restaurant this is an even more special accolade for what is a very British institution. It also proves the importance of Sunday dining to people and that Harpenden is on the map with the best in the UK". Alec added that "This superb result is great for local food and our top quality local producers who help us show how good Sunday Lunch can be."
The Guardian newspaper has featured a short video of John, Alec and That Little Place in their online Guardian Small Business Network. The video describes the business reasons behind our ethos to strive to source as much local produce as possible - See it here

This year we celebrate 5 years of good food and drink at That Little Place and current Runner Up Observer Food Awards Best Sunday Lunch. As Harpenden’s unique local restaurant where quality food comes first, our specialities include the most local prime beef and lamb at great value.
Our traditional Sunday Roast main dishes have gained the reputation of the best for miles around and now nationally. Something for everyone, with the best local beef, local lamb, pork and our own mushroom cous cous and almond nut bake. Each one a Little feast with all the trimmings: homemade Yorkshire pudding, Roast Potatoes, Seasonal mixed Vegetables, Swede Mash, Bacon-Wrapped Sausage (with meat dishes), Sage and Onion Stuffing and Gravy (Vegetarian with Nut Bake). Crackling with pork.
Our Dinner Menu for the rest of the week is of the same high quality but with even more inventiveness as well as hearty tradition. During the week look out for our changing Specials. They are all freshly prepared on the premises with the only the best freshest and local ingredients and cooked to order.
We are rather proud of our brand new mulled wine cured rump of beef Starter, our own idea and a bit of a taste extravaganza reared just a few miles down the road by the award-winning Hedges Farm. There are plenty of other original and classic dishes to choose from too, including even more delicious vegetarian options.
Our award-winning Chef-owner Alec continues with his work promoting local food and drink and is now something of a regular on BBC 3 Counties Radio with Nick Coffer’s “Weekend Kitchen”. We’ve also been busy been perfecting our recipe for bottle conditioned real ale “Ale 5” and, thanks to last year with perfect hop growing eather, are told we have come up with a world class beer. Give it a try!
Only the freshest dishes prepared exclusively on the premises in small quantities and cooked to order are served to ensure quality. The Local Specialties section shows exactly where the food comes from to bring you the Best of British as part of our work with local producers showcasing the highest quality ingredients. Many herbs, hops, fruit and vegetables are grown or foraged by us. Our tiny roof herb garden is becoming established and guarantees even more freshness.
If you fancy a bit of fun with our unique Restaurant Quiz Mondays to Thursdays just ask for this week’s questions and an answer sheet for a chance to win a bottle of wine. No entry fee, no ‘Quiz Master, no intrusion at all – just take your time. One entry per table. Answers on website.
